Yoga and Fitness
A tension headache is typically defined as having a tight band around the head, scalp, or neck and shoulders. It can be caused by stress, anxiety, depression, or unbalanced activity. 90% of primary headaches are tension type headaches. Tension type headaches can also serve as triggers for migraines. What frustrates many headache sufferers is that oftentimes normal daily activities are the triggers/culprits for triggering their headaches. Sitting at the desk or computer, having to make deadlines for work, housework, cleaning, or prolonged use of the phone can all lead to headaches. The problem is that these activities cannot be avoided; they are a part of our daily job tasks and taking care of our families.
The first sign of a tension headache is usually a feeling of tightness in the muscles of the shoulders and neck. One solution found to be helpful in resolving tension in the neck and shoulders, and potentially a headache, is through Yoga. Yoga exercises are aimed at relieving physical and mental tension, and relax the muscles to a better resting tone. When suffering neck and upper back pain or a headache, gentle restorative Yoga, as well as breathing and relaxation exercises, can help decrease the intensity of the headaches and often times stop the pain cycle and resolve the headache.
Neck pain and headaches are common conditions treated by Lou Rossi D.C. and Kyle Milligan P.T. at Centerpointe Chiropractic and Physical Therapy. An important part of the treatment plan is to get the patient involved in the treatment of their condition. Yoga and relaxation exercises are a great supplement to the care and treatment rendered at the clinic. Centerpointe Chiropractic and Physical Therapy will be holding free yoga classes on October 22nd, October 29th, November 5th, November 19th, December 3rd, and December 17th. Lisa Campbell, a certified yoga instructor, will be teaching the yoga class. It is an introductory class that is available for everyone. The focus will be learning how to relax through gentle stretching, various breathing techniques, and visualization exercises. The class will be free, and you are encouraged to bring a friend or family member. We do ask that you register ahead of time.
